At the British Embassy in Berlin, we launched Ambassador for a Day in 2021. The programme has focused on empowering young women, with one recent edition opening up to young people of all genders. Over time, the programme has evolved to reflect key UK priorities and emerging global challenges, while continuing to champion inclusion and equal opportunities. Since 2021, we have welcomed more than 60 inspiring young women and men from across Germany for a day of meetings, workshops and networking opportunities.
Alumni Conference 2025
The day kicked off with tea and coffee at the Ambassador’s Residence, setting a warm and welcoming tone. A video message from the British Ambassador followed, before the Deputy Head of Mission took the lead with a personal welcome and an energizing ice breaker. After a short coffee break, Jake Benford from the Bertelsmann Stiftung delivered an inspiring keynote on the UK’s reset with the European Union.
Participants, also from other European countries, then broke into working groups, exploring different angles on this topic before gathering for a thought-provoking lunch themed “Different ways of making a difference” where participants could network with inspiring female leaders. The afternoon was filled with collaboration and insightful group presentations of the outcomes of their discussions. The day wrapped up with heartfelt goodbyes at a lively dinner in Berlin.
2024
The day began with warm welcomes from British Ambassador Jill Gallard and German Ambassador Miguel Berger, followed by energizing workshops and networking. Highlights included a speed-dating session with embassy staff, a visit to the Federal Foreign Office, and a lively Q&A with State Minister Lührmann. The evening wrapped up with a fireside chat at the British Ambassador’s Residence featuring journalist Katja Hoyer.
2023
For our second cohort, we invited even more young women for Winners Day in June 2023. Winners received media training from the Chief Foreign Policy Reporter for FOCUS Magazine, Gudrun Dometeit, and met Anna Lührmann, Minister for Europe & Climate at the German MFA. A reception in the evening was co-hosted by Damjan Denkovski, Deputy Executive Director of the Centre for Feminist Foreign Policy and was attended by a wide range of members of Diplomatic Corps and other external contacts.
2022
Our first cohort of 20 inspirational winners from across Germany visited the Embassy in May 2022. They had the chance to learn key skills from our senior diplomats, as well as meeting international leaders from the UK and Germany and sharing their own incredible ideas for change.
